Truecaller is broadening its focus beyond caller ID with the launch of Scam Checker, a new tool designed to combat the increasing prevalence of digital fraud. Initially rolling out in India, Scam Checker allows users to verify potentially malicious phone numbers, links, and messages.
No App or Account Required
A key feature of Scam Checker is its accessibility. Users can access the tool via a web browser or within the Truecaller Android app without needing to create an account or install any software. This ease of access is intended to encourage widespread use and rapid reporting of scams.
How Scam Checker Works
The tool functions by allowing users to paste a phone number, URL, or message into the checker. Scam Checker then expands shortened links, traces redirects, and compares the information against Truecaller’s extensive fraud database. It also leverages ScamFeed, Truecaller’s crowdsourced intelligence platform, to highlight content already flagged by other users.
Growing Threat of Digital Fraud
The launch of Scam Checker comes as digital fraud becomes a significant problem globally. Truecaller reports that its community in India has already submitted 20,000 reports of live scams, with approximately 1,300 new reports added each week. During a single week in September, the company’s systems analyzed 12.9 billion messages worldwide, identifying over 20 million fraudulent messages.
Adapting to a Competitive Market
Truecaller’s move also reflects the evolving competitive landscape in India’s caller identification market. With major players like Apple and Google incorporating spam protection features into their operating systems, and telecom operators enhancing their own security measures, Truecaller is positioning itself as a more comprehensive cybersecurity platform, rather than solely relying on its caller ID functionality. The company plans to further enhance Scam Checker with features like screenshot analysis and more advanced AI-powered fraud detection in future updates.
