Google is expanding the capabilities of its Gemini AI assistant beyond product discovery, now testing a direct purchasing experience with Flipkart in India. The move signals a shift towards turning AI interfaces into complete e-commerce destinations.
Direct Purchases Within Gemini
Selected users in India are now seeing a “Buy” button alongside product listings from Flipkart within Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. Clicking this button initiates a Flipkart-branded checkout process, streamlining the shopping experience by eliminating the need to re-search for the item. This is currently limited to a subset of users and products.
Limited Initial Rollout
The initial test focuses on a specific range of products: smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. Not all users will see the “Buy” button, and even those who do will only have the option for eligible items. Google reportedly plans a wider rollout in October, timed to coincide with India’s festive shopping season, according to the trial.
Part of a Broader Commerce Strategy
This experiment aligns with Google’s broader push into “agentic commerce,” a concept where AI systems assist users throughout the entire shopping process – from initial product searches to post-purchase support. Earlier this year, Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to facilitate communication between AI agents and retailers, and Flipkart was among the initial companies to support the protocol.
Investment and Integration
Google’s investment of approximately $350 million in Flipkart earlier in 2024, as part of a funding round led by Walmart, underscores the strategic importance of this partnership. While the specific technology powering the integration remains unclear, the current implementation opens a Flipkart-branded checkout flow within the Google interface.
The potential impact for shoppers is a more compressed shopping journey, moving away from the traditional search → product page → checkout sequence and towards a more conversational, AI-driven experience.
