Meta’s Muse AI app is quickly establishing itself as a major player in the burgeoning personal AI assistant market. Unlike traditional chatbots, Muse is designed to proactively do things for users – booking travel, managing emails, and even shopping online – rather than simply responding to questions.
Rapid User Adoption
The app has seen impressive download numbers since its launch on September 8. According to estimates from Sensor Tower reported by TechCrunch, Muse surpassed 3.4 million downloads by September 25. This initial traction outpaced Meta’s previous Meta AI app, with over 902,000 downloads recorded in its first six days, Bloomberg reported, citing Sensor Tower data.
How Muse Works
Muse operates using Meta’s Muse Spark model within a secure environment. The app utilizes a dedicated virtual machine, termed Muse Secure VM, to isolate user data and control online access. Users maintain control over which services Muse connects to and the permissions granted. The agent is designed to continue working on tasks even after the app is closed, seeking user approval for sensitive actions like purchases or email sending.
Capabilities and Availability
Muse is capable of handling a wide range of tasks, including:
- Sending emails
- Booking travel arrangements
- Shopping online
- Assisting with selling items
- Negotiating lower bills
- Managing longer-term projects
Currently, the Meta Muse AI app is available to users in the United States and Canada. Meta has announced plans to expand its functionality with additional connectors, Mac computer integration, video interaction features, and compatibility with its smart glasses.
Privacy Considerations
The app’s ability to interact with online services on a user’s behalf raises privacy concerns, as it potentially requires access to sensitive account information. Meta states that users retain control over connected services and that approvals are required for sensitive actions.
