India’s 590M Gamers Redefine ‘Casual’ Play

The line between casual and dedicated gaming is blurring, particularly in India where mobile devices are the primary platform for a massive and growing audience. With approximately 590 million gamers, India represents the world’s second-largest market for mobile game downloads, according to Google India, citing Lumikai’s State of India Interactive Media and Gaming Report FY24.

Mobile First, Not Mobile Only

While 95% of gamers in India play on mobile devices, as estimated by Niko Partners, that statistic doesn’t define the intensity of their engagement. A single smartphone can facilitate both brief, casual puzzle games during a commute and extended, competitive multiplayer sessions. The device itself doesn’t measure a player’s commitment, skill, or emotional investment.

Beyond the Device: What Defines a Gamer?

Player commitment is determined by factors beyond the device used, including frequency of play, mastery of game systems, social involvement, and emotional attachment. Someone might begin with short mobile sessions but later supplement their gaming with a PC gaming subscription, like Xbox PC Game Pass, to explore different game types and experiences. This demonstrates that platform choice doesn’t dictate a player’s identity.

The Rise of Mobile Gaming

The accessibility of mobile gaming has been a key driver of its growth. The launch of the Apple App Store in July 2008, initially with around 500 apps, and Google Play in March 2012, offering a unified platform for various digital content, provided users with direct access to games. Touch controls and the always-available nature of smartphones removed the need for dedicated gaming hardware, integrating games into daily life.

Smart Buying for Evolving Habits

As gaming habits evolve, players are increasingly seeking value. Gamers are looking for deals on subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass to reduce costs as their interests expand beyond mobile. Platforms like Eneba offer digital marketplace access to membership codes, with clear information on platform and regional compatibility. This ensures buyers select the correct option for their intended account, verifying merchant legitimacy and code validity.

India’s Unique Position

India’s gaming landscape exemplifies this shift. Google India reported 23 million new gamers in FY24, bringing the total to approximately 590 million. The average weekly playtime also increased by 30% during the same period. The 2026 FICCI-EY media and entertainment report highlights a framework separating game depth – engagement intensity and design complexity – from access format, positioning mobile gaming between everyday entertainment and sustained play.
