Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), India’s third-largest telecom operator, has experienced a notable increase in subscriber numbers, continuing a trend of growth that began around February 2026. While the company has been steadily adding users in recent months, August 2026 saw an unusually large jump.
Subscriber Base Boost
According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its monthly performance indicator report, VIL added approximately 5.06 million wireless subscribers during August 2026. This substantial gain is expected to positively influence the company’s quarterly performance, particularly if the new subscribers are utilizing 4G and 5G services across various regions.
Several factors may be contributing to this growth. VIL has reportedly benefited from increased investment, allowing for capital expenditure (capex) to improve network quality and expand 5G rollout. Alongside these infrastructure improvements, more effective and aggressive marketing strategies are also believed to be playing a role.
Allegations of Unfair Practices
Despite the positive subscriber numbers, VIL is facing scrutiny from competitors Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The two companies have lodged complaints with the regulatory body alleging that VIL is offering differentiated offers to customers porting their numbers to its network.
Jio and Airtel argue that such practices violate regulations prohibiting telcos from creating different offers for porting customers, and have requested the regulatory body investigate VIL’s actions. According to the complaints, if the subscriber growth is indeed driven by these potentially improper offers, it could create long-term difficulties for the company.
