Vodafone Idea (Vi) is currently evaluating a new loyalty program, dubbed ‘Vi Stars’, for a limited number of its prepaid customers. The program aims to reward users for recharging their accounts, potentially bolstering customer retention in a competitive market.
How Vi Stars Works
Early testing, as reported by TelecomTalk, shows that eligible users can accumulate ‘Vi Stars’ with each prepaid recharge. In one instance, a Rs 299 recharge yielded 44 Vi Stars under a ‘2X rewards’ promotion. The program interface suggests these accumulated Stars can then be applied towards future recharge payments.
The rewards experience is being powered jointly by Vi and TWID, a rewards-based payment network that enables brands to offer and manage customer rewards. TWID facilitates the earning, management, and redemption of reward points during transactions.
Uncertainties Remain
Despite the initial rollout, several key details surrounding Vi Stars remain unclear. Vi has not yet announced the conversion rate between Vi Stars and Indian Rupees, meaning the actual monetary value of the rewards is currently unknown. Furthermore, the operator has not specified minimum redemption balances, the validity period of the Stars, or which prepaid plans will be eligible for earning rewards.
It is also uncertain whether customers will be able to fully cover a recharge amount using Vi Stars, or if the rewards will only apply to a portion of the total cost. The ‘2X rewards’ messaging suggests that the number of Stars earned may vary based on the user, recharge value, or ongoing promotional campaigns.
Why a Loyalty Program Now?
Telecom operators in India frequently employ incentives like cashback, data bonuses, and bundled subscriptions to drive recharges through their official apps. A points-based system like Vi Stars offers a different approach, potentially encouraging continued engagement and repeat transactions. Unlike one-off offers, a loyalty program provides an accumulating balance, incentivizing users to remain within the Vi ecosystem for future savings.
Currently, the program is not universally available. Vi is likely assessing the program’s performance and user response before considering a wider release. Customers can check for availability by navigating to the payment page during a recharge.
