Samsung is gearing up to launch its Galaxy S27 series in the first quarter of 2027, potentially between January and March. The new lineup, intended to compete with devices like the Apple iPhone 18 Pro, OnePlus 16, and iQOO 16, will consist of four models: the Galaxy S27 5G, Galaxy S27 Plus 5G, Galaxy S27 Pro 5G, and the high-end Galaxy S27 Ultra 5G.
Display Technology to See Significant Improvements
A key focus for the Galaxy S27 series will be upgraded display panels. According to reports, the Galaxy S27 Ultra 5G will feature the latest M16 OLED panel, the same technology currently used in Apple’s iPhone Duo. This new panel promises higher brightness, improved battery efficiency, better colour accuracy, and increased durability. The Samsung M16 OLED also supports Colour-Filter On-Encapsulation (COE) for enhanced colour reproduction.
The Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27 Pro, and Galaxy S27 Plus will also receive a display upgrade, moving to the Samsung M16 OLED from the M14 OLED panels found in the Galaxy S26 models.
Design and Processor Changes
Samsung is reportedly planning a design revamp, particularly for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which is expected to feature a pill-shaped rear camera arrangement. The Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus will retain the camera design of the Galaxy S26 series.
Under the hood, the Galaxy S27 series will see processor upgrades. In the U.S.A., the devices will likely be powered by the Qualcomm 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Elsewhere, including in India, Samsung may utilise its own Exynos 2700 chipset, which is anticipated to launch in December 2026. This suggests a return to a mixed chipset strategy for Samsung.
Battery and Feature Expansion
Leaks indicate Samsung is considering a switch to silicon-carbon batteries for improved performance. Furthermore, the Privacy Tech feature, currently exclusive to the Ultra model, is planned to be expanded to all Galaxy S27 models, including the standard S27 and S27 Plus.
Notably, Samsung will reportedly discontinue its Edge series, meaning there will be no Galaxy S27 Edge 5G model in 2027.
