Apple is launching its iPhone 18 models today, led by the top-tier iPhone 18 Pro Max 5G. While the entire lineup—including a standard iPhone 18 and potentially a foldable ‘iPhone Ultra/iPhone Duo Fold 5G’—is generating buzz, the Pro Max is attracting particular attention due to a series of significant upgrades.
Powering the Future: The A20 Pro Chipset
At the heart of the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be the A20 Pro chipset, Apple’s first mobile processor built on a 2nm process. This represents a substantial leap forward, promising both performance gains and improved power efficiency. The chip will employ a 2+4 CPU configuration, featuring 2 Everest cores and 4 Sawtooth cores. According to leaks, the power-efficient cores will have 8MB of L2 cache, an increase from the 6MB found in the A19 Pro, while the performance cores will retain a 16MB L2 cache. The A20 Pro is projected to achieve an AnTuTu 11 score exceeding 3 million points, up from 2.5 million in the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Redesigned Optics & Larger Battery
Apple is also focusing on improvements to the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s camera system. The device is expected to feature a triple-camera setup with a 48MP main sensor boasting a variable aperture, allowing users greater control over depth of field and low-light performance. This will be complemented by a 48MP ultrawide-angle lens with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 48MP telephoto periscope lens, also with OIS. The front-facing camera will be upgraded to a 24MP sensor with Center Stage functionality.
To support the increased power demands of the A20 Pro and the enhanced camera features, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will house a larger 5567 mAh battery, a significant increase from the 4832 mAh battery in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This, combined with the efficiency of the 2nm process, should deliver substantially improved screen-on time.
Design Refinements & Connectivity
The iPhone 18 Pro Max will also see design changes, including a redesigned Dynamic Island that is expected to be 30% smaller, increasing the screen-to-body ratio to 94%. The Face ID sensor will be positioned behind the display. The rear of the device will feature two distinct rectangular modules, with the upper module housing the camera system and the lower module designed to accommodate a Qi2/MagSafe power bank.
Connectivity will also be upgraded with Apple’s N2 wireless chipset, supporting Wi-Fi 7, and the next-generation Apple C2 modem. The C2 modem is expected to provide faster internet speeds, satellite support, and reduced power consumption.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to launch at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event today, led by CEO John Ternus. Leaks suggest a price increase is likely, with the base 256GB model potentially starting at $1299, or around Rs 1,59,900 in India. New color options, including Dark Cherry, Silver, Black, and Blue, will also be available.
