Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) both currently offer a Rs 299 prepaid plan, aiming to provide competitive options for Indian mobile users. While the price point is identical, the benefits and features offered by each provider diverge, catering to different user needs.
Jio’s Rs 299 Plan: Data and Entertainment
Jio’s Rs 299 plan is positioned as an “industry-leading” unlimited plan, providing users with 1.5GB of high-speed data per day, totaling 42GB over the 28-day validity period. Alongside this, the plan includes 100 SMS messages per day and unlimited voice calls. Once the daily data allowance is exhausted, data speeds are reduced to up to 64 Kbps.
A key differentiator for Jio’s offering is the inclusion of bundled subscriptions. The plan includes access to JioTV and JioAICloud, and a free 18-month Pro Plan of Google Gemini, valued at Rs 35,100, offering 5,000GB of cloud storage and other features. To maintain access to the Google Gemini benefits, users must remain subscribed to a 1.5GB/day plan priced at Rs 299 or higher throughout the offer period. A JioHotstar Mobile subscription is also included, contingent on recharging within 48 hours of the current plan’s expiry and logging in with the same Jio number.
Vi’s Rs 299 Plan: Variable Data and Network Focus
Vodafone Idea’s Rs 299 plan offers a more variable experience, with the amount of daily data depending on the user’s location. The plan provides unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS messages per day, but the daily data allowance can be 1GB, 2GB, or unlimited, depending on the circle. After the daily data quota is used, speeds are throttled to up to 64 Kbps, with charges of Rs 1 or Rs 1.5 applying for local or STD SMS, respectively, once the daily SMS quota is exhausted.
Vi offers different tiers of benefits based on location:
- Unlimited Plan (1GB/day): Available in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Bihar, Chennai, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Goa, Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP East, UP West, and West Bengal.
- Hero Benefit Circles (2GB/day): Available in Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, North East, and Odisha.
The “Hero Benefits” include unlimited night data (12am-6am) without pack deduction, weekend data rollover (unused data from Monday-Friday carries over to Saturday-Sunday), and 2GB of backup data per month, claimable through the Vi App. Select users may also be offered an upgrade to Vi’s “Non-Stop Hero” plan, providing truly unlimited data.
Pricing and Additional Perks
Both Jio and Vi’s Rs 299 plans offer an effective per-day pricing of approximately Rs 10.68. Jio recently relaunched its Prime Membership at Rs 300, offering tariff protection for the Rs 299 plan. Vi users recharging through the Vi App using Paytm UPI, BHIM, MobiKwik UPI, or Amazon Pay UPI can receive assured cashback ranging from Rs 25 to Rs 75, and earn 2X rewards (44 Vi Stars) on a Rs 299 recharge, redeemable for future recharges.
Ultimately, the best plan depends on individual needs and network availability. According to the report, if users experience strong 4G and 5G connectivity, they should opt for the network offering the benefits they value most.
