OpenAI has launched a significant upgrade to ChatGPT with the release of the Astra model, moving beyond simple conversational AI and venturing into territory that approaches Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Sam Altman’s OpenAI is rolling out the ChatGPT 6 Astra model in batches to ChatGPT Pro users, offering capabilities that allow it to interact directly with a user’s computer and software via voice commands.
Beyond Chat: What Astra Can Do
Unlike previous iterations focused on text-based responses, ChatGPT Astra can now actively do things on a computer. This includes automating complex workflows, troubleshooting software issues, and even assisting with web development and research. According to OpenAI, Astra can learn and improve workflows independently, reducing the need for constant human intervention.
Here’s a breakdown of Astra’s key capabilities:
- Complex Workflow Automation: Astra can build AI workflows where individual agents perform specific tasks, streamlining complex processes and reducing the need for extensive prompt engineering.
- Software Troubleshooting: The model can detect issues on-screen and interact with software to find solutions, acting as a virtual technical support agent. However, hardware-related problems still require a human technician.
- Professional Software Integration: Astra can work with professional software used in fields like computer-aided design (CAD), 3D creation (Blender), and game development (Unreal Engine), completing tasks that would typically take humans hours in a matter of minutes.
- Web Development & Testing: Astra can build and test websites, performing quality assurance tasks like button clicks, menu navigation, and identifying performance issues.
- Research & Form Completion: Astra can conduct web research, access publications, and automatically fill out online forms, significantly reducing manual effort.
Accessing ChatGPT Astra
Currently, access to ChatGPT Astra is limited to ChatGPT Pro subscribers. Users can select the “GPT-6 Pro” model – powered by the Astra LLM – from the model picker within the ChatGPT interface. OpenAI is rolling out access in batches, so the option may not be immediately available to all Pro users. Desktop app users should ensure they have the latest version (Menu → Check for updates).
API Access and Pricing
Developers can access the Astra 6 model via the OpenAI API, using the model name “gpt-6-astra”. Pricing is set at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. OpenAI explains that tokens are the building blocks of language for the model, and usage is subject to token limits.
