Nothing Phone (2) owners will not be upgrading to Android 17. Company CEO Carl Pei explained the decision stems from the age of the phone’s kernel, with the chipset vendor confirming it won’t support the new Android version.
Support Timeline Explained
The Nothing Phone (2) launched in 2023, and while Nothing initially pledged three years of OS updates, it ultimately provided four, exceeding the original commitment. Pei stated the company felt it had been fair, especially as it delivered on its initial promise after a brief period where it appeared to have offered more than planned.
Despite the end of major Android version updates, Nothing will continue to provide security patch updates for the Phone (2) until 2027. This ensures the device remains protected against vulnerabilities even without the latest features.
Upgrade Options and Future Plans
Users hoping to experience Android 17 will need to upgrade to a newer Nothing device, such as the Phone (3) or other recent releases. Looking ahead, Nothing has confirmed it will not release a Phone (4) in 2026, citing rising component costs. The Phone (3) will remain the company’s flagship device until the Phone (4) arrives in 2027.
