Apple Pay has expanded its reach in India through a new collaboration with PayU, enabling tap-to-pay functionality at numerous retail locations utilizing PayU’s payment infrastructure. This builds on the initial launch of Apple Pay in India alongside Axis Bank.
PayU Broadens Apple Pay Access
The integration with PayU allows customers to make contactless payments using their iPhones and iPads at a growing number of merchants. PayU’s network of retailers, equipped with compatible payment scanners, will now accept Apple Pay, offering a more secure and convenient payment option. Apple has stated that support for Apple Watch and Mac will be added at a later date.
How Apple Pay Works in India
Apple Pay leverages Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, storing card details on the device itself rather than sharing them with merchants. Transactions are authorized using Face ID, Touch ID, a device passcode, or a one-time dynamic security code, enhancing security and privacy. According to Apple, this system uses a unique and dynamic account number for each Apple Pay account, protecting confidential data on a certified chip.
Eligible Devices
Apple has confirmed compatibility with a wide range of its devices. The following devices are currently supported:
- iPhones: All iPhone models with Face ID or Touch ID, except the iPhone 5s.
- iPads: All iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad Mini models featuring Touch ID or Face ID.
- Macs: All Apple Mac models equipped with Touch ID.
An update regarding compatible Apple Watch models is still awaited.
Axis Bank Card Requirement & Future Plans
Currently, Apple Pay in India is limited to eligible cards issued by Axis Bank. To set up Apple Pay, users need to add a supported Axis Bank card through the Apple Pay app and follow the on-screen instructions. Apple may explore integrating with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the dominant payment system in India, in the future, potentially expanding Apple Pay’s reach and even bringing UPI to a global audience, according to analysis of the situation.
Alongside Apple Pay, the company may also introduce other services to the Indian market, such as the Apple Upgrade device leasing program, currently available in countries like the United States.
