Airbnb is significantly expanding the functionality of its app with a suite of new features, headlined by an AI-powered search capability. The update, part of a larger fall product release, aims to transform the platform from a simple lodging marketplace into a comprehensive travel planning hub.
AI Takes Center Stage in Property Discovery
The core of the update is a new AI Search function that allows users to describe their ideal property using natural language. Rather than relying on rigid filters and keywords, users can now input requests like “a property with a pool” and the system will surface relevant listings. Airbnb says this approach is designed to help users find suitable accommodations even if they don’t know exactly what they’re looking for.
Smarter Comparisons and Personalized Recommendations
Beyond initial searches, Airbnb is leveraging AI to assist with decision-making. Users who save properties to their wishlists will now receive AI-generated summaries and review highlights, streamlining the comparison process and reducing the potential for decision fatigue. This feature is intended to help travelers quickly weigh their options and identify the best fit for their needs.
Expanding Beyond Accommodation
Airbnb is also broadening its service offerings directly within the app. Depending on location, users can now access a range of travel-related services, including:
- Meal delivery
- Laundry services
- Baby gear rental
- Ski gear rental
- Boat rentals
Grocery delivery is also expanding to more areas, providing travelers with convenient access to essential supplies.
Social Discovery and Local Insights
The update introduces a new social element with a travel map displaying the destinations visited by friends and connections – with user privacy controls allowing them to choose whether or not to share their travel history. Airbnb is also creating neighborhood-focused pages, built using guest reviews and data, to highlight local food, activities, and attractions. These pages aim to provide travelers with authentic recommendations based on real experiences.
According to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, the company is taking a measured approach to AI integration, prioritizing features that address genuine user needs rather than simply adding a chatbot. He indicated that the AI Search function is just the beginning, with plans for ongoing improvements and expansion of AI capabilities within the app.
