Despite the ongoing rollout of 5G networks, 4G smartphones are poised for a comeback in India. Counterpoint Research projects a 3% growth in 4G smartphone shipments in 2026, a significant turnaround after a 48% decline in 2025.
Shifting Market Dynamics
This unexpected resurgence is primarily attributed to rising component costs, which are making even entry-level 5G handsets more expensive. This price increase is widening the gap between 4G and 5G devices, making 4G phones a more attractive option for budget-conscious consumers, according to Counterpoint Research.
The market share of 4G smartphones is expected to increase from 11% in 2025 to 13% in 2026. Counterpoint notes this shift is particularly noticeable among consumers prioritizing features and value over the latest network technology.
Budget Segment Leads the Charge
The most significant changes are occurring in the under ₹20,000 price segment. The number of brands offering 4G models in the ₹10,000–₹20,000 range has dramatically increased, jumping from two in 2025 to twelve in 2026. This indicates manufacturers are expanding their 4G offerings beyond the very cheapest devices.
4G as a Value Proposition
This trend doesn’t signal a slowdown in India’s adoption of 5G. Instead, 4G is being re-positioned as a viable alternative for consumers who prioritize factors like price, battery life, screen quality, storage capacity, and other hardware features over 5G connectivity. Counterpoint Research anticipates that 4G smartphones will account for 15% of India’s smartphone shipments in 2027, as component costs are not expected to decrease in the near future, sustaining 4G’s importance in the budget phone market.
